Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With single-vehicle wrecks like this, it’s important to understand that authorities are not always as thorough as people would expect. They certainly can be, depending on the department or the officer involved. Sometimes, though, single-vehicle wrecks are treated as a low priority, meaning officers might overlook complex factors or move on before they’ve had a chance to conduct proper investigations.

This is why there have been so many cases throughout my careers that involved factors which only came to light following independent investigations. Medical conditions, mechanical defects, road design flaws, drivers illegally over-served by alcohol providers, missing lights or signage—likely or not, these things happen. If victims and families are going to work toward some kind of resolution, they need to be sure they’re at least getting the full story. Is that happening here?
