Dallas, TX — March 10, 2024, Fernando Rodriguez Herrera and three others were injured following a multi-car accident at 11:45 p.m. on Highway 183.
Authorities said following initial investigations that the crash occurred along both directions of the John Carpenter Freeway near Dividend Drive.
According to officials, 23-year-old Fernando Rodriguez Herrera was in a Honda Accord going westbound along the freeway. In oncoming lanes, it appears a Land Rover made an unsafe lane change in front of a Volkswagen Passat. The Volkswagen reportedly swerved to avoid the Land Rover, lost control, and hit the Land Rover. This in turn sent the Land Rover from eastbound to westbound lanes where it crashed with Rodriguez Herrera.
As a result of the collisions, Rodriguez Herrera sustained injuries described as serious.. Three people from the Land Rover had apparently serious injuries, as well. The driver of the Volkswagen may have had minor injuries.

Right now, authorities allege that the Land Rover driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. They say they’re waiting on results from that driver’s toxicology tests. Hopefully they’re using that time to look into other evidence. Folks don’t often consider anything beyond a driver’s blood-alcohol content, but other details can be vital for ensuring there’s accountability for the harm the victims suffered.
For example, our firm has handled hundreds of civil cases against negligent bars and other alcohol providers who illegally over-served someone that then caused an accident. We, too, have to prove those drivers they served were intoxicated. BAC is obviously a key piece of evidence for that. But we also use things like credit card statements, receipts, surveillance video, witness statements, and even texts and social media. There were plenty of times we had enough evidence even without BAC to prove someone’s intoxication.
So if authorities here are being thorough, they’re no doubt looking into that kind of stuff right now. If not though, they may be letting crucial evidence and possibly even accomplices slip through the cracks.
