Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I clearly don’t know more about this specific accident than what’s in the news, and it’s important others recognize that, as well (unless they happen to have evidence not mentioned publicly). Here’s why I feel the need to bring that up. Alcohol tends to evoke a visceral response from people, and it’s understandable why that is. It’s a serious problem in Texas, and it leads to indescribable harm, especially down in Houston where it seems to happen all the time.
But police don’t always say they’re looking into alcohol when they suspect it to be involved. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of standard procedure. With late night and early morning accidents, it’s something people tend to ask about, so addressing that it’s on their radar ahead of time may simply be prudence. Perhaps further investigations will show alcohol was a factor here, but until there’s evidence, it’s best folks just wait for all the facts.
