Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s not my place to speak on any specific allegations here, but not a lot of people realize there’s often more than one party responsible for accidents involving alcohol. Many of them involve someone who was illegally over-served by a bar or similar establishment. If an alcohol provider over-serves someone, it can expose the alcohol provider to potential criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and possible liability if it results in people getting hurt or killed.

The reason not a lot of people know about this, frankly, is that authorities too often overlook it. I’ve helped hundreds of families hold negligent alcohol providers accountable for contributing to an accident, and more often than not, we’re the ones bringing the alcohol providers to the attention of authorities. All of their focus goes to charging a drunk driver rather than actually getting the whole story and getting the victims and families a complete picture of what happened. Maybe that isn’t what happened here, but it’s a possibility that deserves more attention than it tends to get.
