How Did This Accident Occur?
Many people would look at this accident—a single-vehicle motorcycle accident in the middle of the night—and just blame the rider. However, I’ve been doing this job for a long time. I’ve had the chance to analyze hundreds of single-vehicle motorcycle accidents. There have been cases where, despite how it seemed on the surface, the evidence turned up by the investigation did not support the stereotype.
I want to be candid here; I don’t know anything more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the reason that the motorcycle veered off the side of the road was because of a mechanical malfunction? Motorcycles, despite being smaller than passenger vehicles, are still complex machines. Any number of things might have gone wrong that could have led to the accident; steering malfunction, brake issues, tire failure, et cetera.
Hopefully, the authorities who are in charge of investigating this accident are taking the time and putting in the effort necessary to get to look behind the surface level evidence at the scene of the accident. A vehicle inspection might be extremely enlightening, even if they aren’t done routinely in most accident investigations. Should the authorities’ investigation seem subpar, a third party investigator can always step in and make sure all the bases are covered.
After all, the people left behind by Mr. Sedall deserve to have real facts backed up by solid evidence, not convenient assumptions that heap possibly unmerited blame on the shoulders of the deceased.
