According to authorities, 43-year-old Eric Heil was traveling on a southeast bound Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Brushy Creek Road in the vicinity west of the Parmer Lane intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the motorcycle was purportedly traveling at unsafe speeds. How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to single-vehicle motorcycle accidents, most people are quick to simply blame the rider. After over three decades in this line of work, however, I am not so quick to jump to that conclusion. I’ve seen plenty of similar cases over the years in which the investigations ended up unearthing evidence of less likely causes that went against the grain of stereotype.

To be clear, I am not insinuating that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the motorcycle’s excessive speed was due to something like brake failure or a throttle problem. Motorcycles, while smaller than passenger vehicles, are still complex machines, after all.

Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the motorcycle by a trained professional in a laboratory setting. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role will not be able to fly under the radar. In the end, the people left behind by the victim deserve real answers backed by solid evidence. That kind of clarity just can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
