Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Over the years, I’ve seen a wide array of factors contribute to single-vehicle accidents. It’s essential to consider those possibilities, especially since they may require thorough accident reconstructions authorities don’t often pursue on their own.

For example, a single-vehicle crash can be caused by poorly maintained roadways. Unexpected potholes, unmarked construction areas, or debris can be difficult to avoid, especially while it’s dark out. There could also be insufficient street lighting or missing signs. Vehicle malfunctions are another critical possibility to consider. A sudden tire blowout or brake failure can catch even the most vigilant drivers off guard.

Given how relatively uncommon some of these factors are, they can be challenging to properly investigate without the right training and tools. They might easily be overlooked, dismissed as irrelevant, or obscured by assumptions that the driver must have done something wrong. Simply put, jumping to conclusions doesn’t help anyone. It’s best to let the evidence speak for itself.
