One concern that people don’t often consider with single-vehicle wrecks like this is when the driver is seriously injured, and there may be few or no witnesses. Generally speaking, authorities should be as thorough as possible both to gather clear evidence and to follow up with the injured driver later on to make sure they get all sides of the story. However, it would surprise folks just how often authorities rely on statements at the scene to put together a report.
Sometimes, officers aren’t given enough time or equipment to actually do a proper accident reconstruction. If there’s no one available to give a statement, then, they may end up rushing to a conclusion just based on gut instinct. It’s something I’ve run into time and time again in my career, and it’s usually something independent investigations can help overcome, since they may be able to catch important details authorities missed.
Perhaps authorities were able to follow up on this crash and put together a cohesive story, but it’s important to keep in mind that police investigations aren’t always the final say of what actually happened in a crash.
