There were reportedly strong crosswinds in the area at the time. Officials indicate that the Tahoe may have been traveling at unsafe speeds as it went through a curve in the roadway leading up to the accident. It reportedly lost control as it came out of the curve as the dolly began to fishtail and the Tahoe took apparently faulty evasive action where it veered to the left. That, however, caused it to enter the eastbound lane of the roadway where it was involved in a collision with an oncoming Chrysler Town and Country van. The van was occupied by 41-year-old Elinka Rodriguez and eight other people. The collision caused the Tahoe to go into a spin and overturn onto its right side. The tow dolly became detached over the course of the accident.

Everyone involved in the accident suffered reportedly severe injuries due to the wreck; the man from the Tahoe, Rodriguez, an 8-year-old girl, a 39-year-old woman, a 20-year-old man, a 39-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, and three 25-year-old men were all transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment.
