Reeves County, TX — January 27, 2025, Edward Rodriguez was killed and two were injured due to an oil well accident at a well off U.S. Highway 285.
Initial statements from the Reeves County Sheriff’s Office say that the industrial accident happened at an oil well located off of U.S. 285 and County Road 114, southeast of Pecos.

Initial details in the news say that 45-year-old Edward Rodriguez and other workers were engaged in fracking operations at the time. While working, authorities report that a pressurized line somehow detached from equipment. This somehow resulted in Edward Rodriguez succumbing to fatal injuries. Two others involved in the accident were injured, one of which had to be flown from the scene.
At this time, factors surrounding the accident are still under investigation. No further details can be reported.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People no doubt understand that work accidents can be complex, but there’s a tendency to just assume OSHA has everything covered. In reality, efforts from OSHA alone rarely cover the needs of workers and families affected by these kinds of accidents.
To be blunt, Texas has the most complex work accident laws of any other state in the country. There is not always a guaranteed path for victims and families to receive benefits following a workplace accident. This sometimes means they have to navigate a challenging legal maze to get a fair resolution, and that requires significant legal strategizing and exhaustive investigations.
OSHA has their own priorities: find potential violations, and issue appropriate penalties. Those efforts don’t often align with the needs of victims and families. They may be left trying to tell their side of the story while a company does everything in its power to focus on its own interests. Keeping the scales balanced and getting victims and families a fair resolution, then, may require prompt action from experienced allies who will prioritize the needs of those affected by the accident.
