Dallas, TX — September 19, 2024, 24-year-old Eddaria Lawrence was injured in a hit-and-run crash with a commercial truck on North Stemmons Freeway in Dallas.
Authorities say the incident happened around 5:45 a.m. on North Stemmons (Interstate 35) near Manana Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests Lawrence was driving a Hyundai Elantra north on the highway some distance ahead of a Mack truck. Investigators believe the truck driver made an unsafe lane change and struck the rear-left quarter of the Hyundai, causing the car to spin out and strike a nearby wall. The truck driver then allegedly fled the scene.

Eddaria Lawrence was seriously injured in the accident.
It is unclear whether authorities located the runaway truck driver. No further details are currently available.

Clearly it’s bad any time a driver chooses to flee the scene after causing an accident, but it’s far worse to see a trained professional make such a serious error and then try to escape the consequences. I’m sure just about everyone except the driver himself hopes he is caught and faces justice. But is charging him really as far as accountability goes for a company driver? What about the people who put him on the road?
People don’t always realize that when a company employee hurts someone while performing his duties, that company may be partly responsible for the damage he causes—especially if the company had policies or practices that led the driver to make bad choices. It’s more common than you might think for a driver’s mistakes to be the result of a negligent employer due to things like long hours, unreasonable deadlines or quotas, disregarding important maintenance, insufficient hiring and training practices, and many others.
It’s not clear whether the Mack truck driver was on official business that morning, but could that be what happened? It certainly bears looking into. In all likelihood, there’s still more to this story that needs to be brought to light. It wouldn’t be right if someone else contributed to a woman’s injuries only to be let off the hook because no one bothered to look for them.
