Dustin Joe Hammond Injured in Car Accident in San Marcos, TX

According to officials, 31-year-old Dustin Hammond was in a Ford Focus going southbound on the highway. Hammond reportedly stopped at the light for De Zavala, then proceeded forward when the light turned green. That’s when authorities say a Nissan Frontier rear-ended Hammond. As a result, Hammond had apparently serious injuries. The other driver wasn’t hurt.

As straightforward as people see rear-end collisions like this, it’s always important to be thorough. Even though there are common possible factors to consider, overlooking less common factors might miss something crucial the victims and families involved need to know about.

For example, I’ve found in recent years that there’s a serious defect authorities almost never consider: seat-back failures. This type of failure occurs when the seat-back is unable to withstand the forces of a crash, causing it to collapse backward. This can lead to severe consequences like exacerbating the injuries of the person in the failing seat or creating a hazard to other passengers behind that person.

The problem, though, is defects like this usually require a lot of specialized knowledge and tools which authorities rarely have access to. So what may appear to be a simple accident suddenly becomes incredibly challenging, and authorities either overlook those challenges entirely or find themselves in over their heads. Maybe nothing so unusual happened here, but I don’t see evidence yet that rules such possibilities out. The question is if authorities even have the ability to get that sort of evidence.
