Gillespie County, TX — November 12, 2024, a teenager was injured in a dump truck accident shortly before 8:30 a.m. along U.S. Highway 290.
According to authorities, a 17-year-old girl was traveling in an eastbound Hyundai Santa Fe on U.S. 290 in the vicinity east of the Usener Road intersection when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a westbound dump truck attempted a left turn onto a private drive at an apparently unsafe time, failing to yield the right-of-way on a left turn. This resulted in a collision between the front-end of the SUV and the right-side of the dump truck.
The girl from the Santa Fe suffered serious injuries over the course of the accident, according to reports; she was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Accidents like this one often prompt questions about what factors led to such a severe collision. In my experience, crashes involving large trucks making left turns frequently demand careful examination of both driver behavior and broader operational issues.
Why did the dump truck turn into the path of the SUV? Was the driver distracted, improperly trained, or making the turn without properly assessing oncoming traffic? Could the driver have been operating under pressure to complete their work quickly, leading to risky decisions? These are the kinds of questions that require thorough investigation to uncover the underlying causes of the crash.
It’s also essential to consider the potential role of the dump truck’s operating company. Companies that own and manage these heavy vehicles are required to ensure their drivers are adequately trained and able to make safe decisions under various conditions. Were they diligent in providing proper oversight, or did failures like inadequate training or unrealistic schedules contribute to this crash? Additionally, the truck’s maintenance history should be reviewed to rule out the possibility that a mechanical issue, like defective brakes or steering, played a part.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
