Authorities indicate that on May 17, a collision occurred just before noon on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. According to reports, a southbound Mazda was struck by an oncoming BMW as the Mazda attempted a U-turn on MLK. The collision then caused another vehicle to get hit.
Mazda passenger Dorthey Small, severely injured after being thrown from the vehicle with a 3-year-old child, was taken to a nearby hospital. Small did not survive the accident and died at the hospital.
Multiple injuries were reported, including those of the 3-year-old who was also a passenger of the Mazda. The child sustained minor injuries despite being thrown from the vehicle.
Investigators report that the driver of the BMW allegedly reached a speed of 116 mph shortly before the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
