Sandusky County, OH — March 17, 2023, Donald Eckel was killed due to an accident where Eckel’s vehicle crashed into a semi-truck.

Investigators said that the incident happened at around 6:40 a.m. along US Highway 20. It appears that 74-year-old Donald Eckel was in a vehicle going along the highway in the area of a Green Creek Township gas station. At that station, a semi-truck apparently made a left turn onto the highway “into the path of” Eckel.

As a result, the vehicles collided. Eckel succumbed to fatal injuries due to the accident. No one else was said to be hurt. Right now, additional details about the crash are unavailable.

Donald Eckel Killed in Semi-Truck Accident in Sandusky County, OH

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Given that reports were not specific on where exactly this crash happened, I want to emphasize that I don’t know more about this awful event than what’s already known to the public. But when I look at gas stations along this stretch of road, I don’t see one where someone making a left turn onto the highway wouldn’t have to yield to cross traffic. Does that mean this incident happened because the truck driver failed to yield?

I wouldn’t ever say so without seeing the evidence for myself. There’s no telling when something unusual leads to a crash without a driver being able to avoid it. But even in situations where someone’s recklessness harms another, the evidence needs to be able to speak for itself so there isn’t any room for anyone to avoid responsibility for their actions. Are steps being taken here to see that happens for this man’s loved ones?
