Preliminary details about the incident are scarce at this time. According to officials, a 92-year-old Pearsall man was reportedly in his backyard at the time. While there, two dogs reportedly attacked the man. This resulted in injuries, including an amputated finger.

Authorities say they located the dog owner, and investigations are ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

At the end of the day, dogs are animals, and they aren’t always predictable. That’s why owners have a general obligation to keep them as secure as reasonably possible. An attack like this might happen if owners leave a gate or a door open, if there are gaps in a fence line, if they leave dogs unattended too long, allowing them to dig under fences, etc. This can be especially serious if the dogs have had incidents like this in the past, as Texas law holds owners responsible if dogs with a bite history go on to harm others. Whether or not that happened here remains to be seen.
