How Did This Accident Occur?

I’m sure some people who read about this accident will have the knee-jerk reaction of wondering what a pedestrian was doing on a highway. I, however, have had the opportunity, over my lengthy career, to analyze hundreds of car accidents involving pedestrians. My question is not “what was the pedestrian doing there?” Rather, I wonder “what could have led the vehicle to strike the pedestrian?”

The problem at this point is that we have very limited information. What I’m inclined to infer is that this particular accident is more complex than most pedestrian accidents. Why? Two vehicles were involved. Was the pedestrian struck by one vehicle before it also crashed into another vehicle? Was there wreck between the two vehicles before the pedestrian was hit? I’m of the persuasion, in this case, to wait and see what details come to light after the investigation is complete. After all, what if something like a mechanical defect was in play. Or perhaps one of the drivers was under the influence? Let me know in a comment if you have any ideas of what could have been a causal factor. The point, though, is that there are simply too many possibilities to be jumping to conclusions.
