If these allegations prove to be true, it frankly wouldn’t be surprising. The question, though, is if authorities found any accomplices here. At 2:30 a.m., a drunk driving crash usually happens after someone who was illegally over-served by a local bar tries to get home after closing time. Those alcohol providers can also be held accountable when contributing to these accidents, but that’s something that too often falls to the victims and their families to see through.

I’ve handled hundreds of cases involving drunk drivers, and whenever it turns out a bar over-served them, it’s almost always our independent investigations calling out those establishments. We generally have to put evidence right in the laps of authorities before they consider criminal investigations. While authorities in Harris County are generally more proactive in these situations, they, too, let things slip through the cracks. That’s why having some safety nets in place to catch those negligent alcohol providers can be crucial after accidents like this.
