Newton, TX — September 24, 2024, 38-year-old Dennis Cooper was injured in a single-vehicle accident on State Highway 87 in Newton.
According to authorities, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Highway 87 near West Tram Road. Investigators say Dennis Cooper was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup south on the highway when he may have lost control for unknown reasons. After traveling off the roadway, the pickup crashed into a tree and came to rest.
Dennis Cooper suffered serious injuries in the crash. No other people or vehicles were involved.

With single-vehicle wrecks, one of my main concerns is always how thorough authorities were with their investigations. The firm gets calls all the time from people who feel police short-changed them by sticking around just long enough to put together a “good enough” narrative and tick a few boxes for a report. Single-vehicle crashes are rarely viewed as a high priority, so a lax approach to investigating them means crucial details too often go unnoticed.
Here’s an example: Not too long ago, I worked on a case for a family who didn’t believe it when police said their loved one didn’t have a seat belt on when he crashed. They happened to know he was a stickler for seat belts after surviving a crash as a child, so they wanted someone to double-check what officers concluded. After careful examination of the vehicle, our experts determined the victim’s vehicle had defective seat belts that came unfastened during the impact. There’s obviously a huge difference between those versions of events, and had we not stepped in the so-called “official” narrative would have baselessly called the victim careless.
I’m not saying anything like that happened in Newton, and luckily the driver is still alive to tell his own story. However, the possibility that early reports got things wrong must be considered after any serious single-vehicle accident. It remains to be seen whether or not authorities really learned the truth of this crash.
