Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When we hear about fatal hit-and-run accidents involving large commercial trucks, there’s a tendency to think they’re the result of a momentary lapse in judgment on the road. However, my experience suggests that incidents like these are rarely that simple. For a driver to allegedly attempt an unsafe U-turn on a busy interstate, as reports indicate here, it raises serious concerns about decision-making and responsibility.

The fact that the truck driver allegedly fled the scene after the accident makes an already serious situation even worse. Commercial truck drivers carry a heavy responsibility to ensure the safety of others on the road. Failing to stop and render aid, particularly after a serious accident, violates both the law and the professional standards that truck operators are expected to uphold. Fortunately, hit-and-run drivers are often located, as law enforcement has various resources to track down vehicles involved in serious incidents, especially large commercial trucks.

If the truck and driver are identified, the investigation may also reveal whether they were operating independently or under the oversight of a trucking company. Companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers are well-trained and avoid dangerous maneuvers, like attempting U-turns on high-speed roadways. If the driver involved was employed by a company that overlooked these standards, that company could bear some responsibility for the incident.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
