How Did This Accident Occur?

If reports here are accurate, then it’s important to find out if the truck’s alleged unsafe lane change was due to just a momentary lapse in attention or due to deeper issues behind the scenes. A lot of folks write off crashes like this as simple mistakes, and that certainly does happen. However, I’ve been a part of hundreds of commercial vehicle accident investigations, and sometimes these crashes are a symptom of dangerous working conditions.

For example, have investigators looked into the driver’s schedule and logs? I handled a case not long ago where a driver crashed due to fatigue after being behind the wheel for over 20 hours straight. It turned out the whole company was coercing drivers to meet unreasonable deadlines. If they failed to do so, they risked losing their jobs. So, drivers had to skip rest breaks, put off maintenance, make dangerous u-turns, speed, rush through lights, and otherwise cut every possible corner to save time. It was inevitable someone would get hurt, and it would be inevitable for that behavior to go on to cause further harm if it wasn’t rooted out and corrected.

Maybe nothing so serious led to this crash, just to be clear. That’s all up to the evidence to say. That said, it’s important for victims and families to make sure that sort of evidence gets attention. If authorities just see this as a simple, isolated mistake, they might move on without properly digging into all of the evidence. If it seems like that’s happening, then it may be best to put the crash in the hands of more thorough independent investigators. That way, there can at least be some assurance that important evidence won’t slip through the cracks.
