Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

UPDATE (December 7, 2023): I looked at some recent information about this crash authorities released to the public, and something unusual stood out that didn’t initially make the news. Apparently, the stop sign that authorities claim Mr. Acosta-Contreras went through was equipped with flashing beacons. However, authorities say they believe the lights were not functional at the time of the crash.

There’s obviously a reason those lights were there, so the fact they might not have been working is a pretty big deal. In fact, it makes me wonder if any of this would have happened had those lights been working. It’s certainly not my place to make that kind of determination, but these kinds of details should never go overlooked.

Did officials know about this issue ahead of time? Had local residents complained about the lights not working? This all is quite the significant addition to what little the news initially said about the crash. I wonder if continued investigations will reveal even more important information the public has yet to hear.
