UPDATE (May 3, 2023): Reports have identified the driver of the van as 59-year-old Lawrence Demeo. It’s said that Demeo had serious injuries due to the collision. Right now, the details surrounding the accident are still under investigation.
Elizabeth, NJ — April 30, 2023, Dawn Cole was killed and one was injured following a tractor-trailer accident at around 10:40 p.m. on the NJ Turnpike.
Initial details about the crash provided by the New Jersey State Police say that the incident happened in the area of Exit 13 for I-278. Details suggest there may have been light rain at the time of the crash.
Preliminary statements indicate that 80-year-old Dawn Cole was a passenger in a van that somehow broke down along northbound lanes of the turnpike. While the van sat in the roadway, it appears a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of the van.
As a result, Cole sustained injuries that ultimately proved fatal. The driver of the van, who has not yet been identified, reportedly went to a local hospital with injuries described as serious. No other injuries were reported, and it’s unclear if any additional vehicle were involved in the collision. Authorities continue to investigate the factors leading up to the crash.
