Comanche County, TX — June 24, 2023, Daniel Schaefer was fatally injured due to a hit-and-run accident just before midnight on Highway 36.

Authorities with the Texas DPS and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s office released details about the incident, which they indicate occurred at approximately 11:58 p.m. in the area of the Highway 36 and U.S. 67 the intersection.

According to current statements, the incident happened as a Dodge Avenger was fleeing Hamilton County Sheriff’s officers along Highway 36. At U.S. 67, it appears the vehicle ran a red light and lost control. This sent the Dodge off-road and into a parking lot where it crashed into 63-year-old Daniel Schaefer. At the time, it’s said that Shafer was outside of two vehicles working to secure a tow chain.

As a result of the collision, Schaefer was killed. The other driver was taken to a hospital and later released. That driver has since been taken to hail. Exact charges relating to the accident as well as circumstances surrounding the apparent police pursuit are unclear at this time. No further information is currently available.
