Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When folks see a single-vehicle wreck, they tend to assume it won’t be long before authorities get some answers, and that’s that. That’s why it’s often surprising to people when they learn how single-vehicle wrecks are sometimes the more complex accidents for authorities to handle. The reality is they’re not often seen as a high priority, so all kinds of important details can slip through the cracks.

Did the vehicle’s brakes fail? Did the victim have a medical condition? Did airbags and seatbelts function properly? Is there an issue with signage or lighting at the intersection? Is the roadway itself hazardous? Was there some other reckless driver involved that fled the scene? Authorities don’t often extend the scope of their investigation beyond more obvious possible factors, like speeding, fatigue, or distracted driving. But I’ve seen all kinds of details, likely or not, lead to deadly car accidents. That’s why more focused, independent investigations are sometimes needed before a victim’s loved ones really get the full story. It wouldn’t be unusual if that happened here, as well.
