Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With authorities alleging one driver here ran the light, this all may seem open-and-shut. However, it’s important that a car accident reconstruction covers all angles just in case there are extenuating circumstances that need to be considered.

For example, it stands out to me that only the people in the Civic had any reported injuries. When two similar vehicles collide, the people inside generally will sustain similar outcomes. When one driver is seriously injured and the other isn’t, though, that’s sometimes a sign that the victim’s vehicle didn’t do something it was supposed to do. Did the seatbelt not lock? Did the airbag fail to inflate? Is the vehicle frame designed or constructed poorly? Did the driver’s seat assembly break loose?

This is just an example, of course, but these are details I can expect a typical independent accident reconstructionist to look into. They have the proper training and tools to do so. Relying solely on the authorities, though, often leaves gaps in the story. That’s why it’s important for victims and families affected by a car accident to follow up with police and bring up any concerns or questions. If they feel those concerns aren’t addressed good enough, they can take steps to see the crash is put in more capable hands.
