Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Head-on collisions on highways often raise serious concerns about road conditions, vehicle control, and whether the crash was preventable. In this case, reports indicate that a Chevrolet Trailblazer lost control on a snowy section of Interstate 80, crossed the median and collided with a semi-truck. A full investigation should determine whether this was due to driver error, road maintenance issues or another contributing factor.
One of the first questions investigators should answer is whether road conditions played a major role in the crash. Snow and ice can make highways especially dangerous, particularly if roads have not been properly treated. Were there signs warning drivers of hazardous conditions? Had road crews plowed and salted the highway? If road maintenance was lacking, that could have increased the risk of vehicles losing control.
At this stage, there isn’t enough public information to determine exactly what led to this crash. But if authorities focus only on who crossed the median without investigating why the vehicle lost control — whether due to road conditions, vehicle issues or driver response — they risk missing key details. A thorough investigation should take all possible factors into account to ensure a full understanding of what went wrong.
