How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to rear-end car accidents, most people are quick to point the finger at the person who had been behind the wheel of the striking vehicle without giving it much additional consideration, if any. I’m not so eager to settle on that conclusion without more information, though. Why? Because I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years. I have seen plenty of similar accidents in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed through thorough investigation. Sometimes, things don’t turn out to have been how the initially appeared on the surface.

That’s not to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does, by the way. As far as I know, driver error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the rear-end collision was a result of something gone wrong with the Honda itself? Maybe it was suffering from brake failure? Or perhaps its throttle had somehow gotten stuck in the open position? True, these things are not particularly likely, but neither are they outside of the realm of possibility.

An in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Honda would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck which might otherwise have been allowed to fly unnoticed under the radar. These kinds of inspections—done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting—are not generally routine in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities, for whatever reason, do not get one done, then a third party investigation can always be brought on to do so, instead. Plus, it never hurts to have a second perspective go over things and ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks.

After all, in the end, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear and detailed understanding as to not only how it happened, but also why. That kind of clarity—real answers backed by solid evidence—simply can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
