Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If the allegations are true, then it seems authorities recognize that there needs to be consequences here. The question, though, is if the alleged drunk driver acted on their own. A lot of the time, this sort of crash also involved a negligent alcohol provider, and they, too, may need to be held accountable.

Simply put, alcohol providers that serve someone who is obviously intoxicated can face potential criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability for resulting injuries. Too often, though, authorities put so much focus on the drunk drivers that they let the alcohol provider slip through the cracks. At the end of the day, victims and families deserve to know that those who wronged them will face the appropriate consequences. So if authorities here haven’t bothered asking where this alleged drunk driver got their alcohol, they may be missing something important.
