Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If it’s true that alcohol led to this crash, that could make things seem open-and-shut. Perhaps they are, it often surprises people just how complex drunk driving accidents can get. That’s because they frequently involve local alcohol providers who illegally over-served the alleged drunk driver, and they, too, can be on the hook for contributing to a serious accident.

The problem is that this isn’t something authorities tend to include in their own efforts. I’ve had hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers. Over the years, I’ve simply lost count of how many times we had to bring a law-breaking alcohol provider to the attention of the police because they never bothered conducting their own investigations beyond the crash scene. It’s possible the circumstances surrounding this crash weren’t so complex, but it’s something folks should keep in mind before they take everything they see following preliminary investigations at face value. There could still be more to the story.
