Corrine Herbert, Jose Elias Valle, Qutab Singh Negi, Fernando Francisco DeMoraels, Nakia Gaines, James Fleming, Child Killed, 63 Injured in Multi-vehicle Truck Accident on I-55 in St. John the Baptist Parish, LA

UPDATE (March 18, 2024): Recent reports have been released which state that 61-year-old Ronald Britt is apparently facing charges in connection with the death of 87-year-old James Fleming. According to these reports, Britt—who was behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler during the inclement weather conditions—was speeding and rear-ended a vehicle. This collision led to the death of Fleming and injury of Fleming’s wife.

UPDATE (October 27, 2023): The names of the victims who were killed in the massive pileup have been released. The name of the six-year-old minor will not be included in this list.

UPDATE (October 25, 2023): The death toll has risen to 8 and the list of injured has increased to 63 as a result of this massive incident.

St. John the Baptist Parish, LA — October 23, 2023, seven people were killed and at least twenty-five were injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident in the morning along I-55.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though the “super-fog” in the area caused by a mix of dense fog and smoke from the marsh fires was a factor. According to reports, the initial accident occurred around mile marker 22.

Allegedly, two of the three 18-wheelers which were involved ended up engulfed in flames, but that was just the beginning. When all was said and done, 158 vehicles were involved in three major pileups in the massive accident. One vehicle was even pushed completely off of the bridge.

Seven people were killed as a result of the accident. It was so extensive that fire trucks reportedly had pull up to the scene at the base of the elevated roadway and use their ladders to reach the affected area on the roadway above. Emergency Medical Services worked tirelessly to help the people involved, setting up a triage and transporting the more than two dozen injured victims to local medical facilities for treatment of injuries incurred during the massive incident. An active investigation of the accident is underway.
