Erath County, TX — September 14, 2024, 43-year-old Corey Cuniff was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on County Road 239 in Erath County.
Authorities say the incident happened around 7:15 p.m. on CR 239 near CR 236. Preliminary investigation suggests Corey Cuniff was driving a Ram 2500 pickup southeast on the roadway when he lost control in a curve for unconfirmed reasons. The pickup left the road, then swerved back through it and overturned. It rolled off the other side of the roadway and hit a fence, where it came to rest on its side.

Cuniff was seriously injured in the crash. A 20-year-old passenger in the pickup received non-life-threatening injuries, and a 44-year-old passenger was reportedly unhurt.

Little as I like to say it, single-vehicle accidents don’t always get the careful investigation they deserve. Why? Because many people treat them like the only real explanation is driver error. That has to be accounted for during the investigation, but seeing folks call an injured man reckless without all the facts really gets my goat.
It’s true that drivers sometimes make mistakes, but if I’ve learned one thing over decades in this business it’s that the truth is rarely as simple as a few sentences in a report make it seem. Fault should never be assumed or assigned automatically. What if there’s more to the story? Things like tire blowouts, medical emergencies, and vehicle defects may not be all that common compared to some other explanations, but they all cause crashes every single day—and they can’t be ignored by investigators.
Unfortunately, less-common elements are often overlooked during a “by the book” police efforts. Turning a blind eye to those possibilities is a problem if it means someone could be blamed for a wreck that was actually out of their hands. Will someone make sure that doesn’t happen in Erath County?
