Accident Report
May 14, 2026, a Columbia man sustained injuries following a semi-truck accident that happened around 1:25 p.m. on I-70.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened near Odessa along westbound lanes of the interstate.
It appears that a 50-year-old Columbia man was in a Mack truck stopped in traffic along I-70. While there, police say that a Peterbilt 18-wheeler slammed into the back of the Mack truck. A Kenworth tractor-trailer also was hit.
Due to the accident, the Mack truck driver was seriously injured. There did not appear to be any other injuries. Additional details are unavailable right now.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When a commercial vehicle rear-ends someone in traffic, it’s usually a sign that they were on their phone, going too fast, or following too closely. Of course, there could be other factors at play. It’s important to consider if something unavoidable occurred—a medical emergency, for example. It’s also important to consider that even a truck driver making a mistake could be a symptom rather than the problem itself. Let me explain.
Any experienced trucker can attest to the fact that some companies force their drivers to behave recklessly. I had a case a while back, for example, where a company routinely coerced drivers into meeting unreasonable deadlines. If they didn’t skip rest breaks, speed, and otherwise cut corners to meet the deadlines, they risked losing their jobs. Naturally, this led to a mistake resulting in a serious crash. Authorities simply put all of their focus on the driver behind the wheel. It wasn’t until we stepped in and dug deeper that the company’s problems were brought to light and addressed directly.
Maybe nothing like that happened here, but that’s how thorough investigations should be after a serious truck wreck. If we want our roads to be safer for unsuspecting motorists and hard-working, responsible truck drivers alike, then it’s important to be vigilant. Accidents might not happen due to isolated, one-off mistakes but rather a series of mistakes that made an accident inevitable. That behavior is bound to put others at risk if left unaddressed. Hopefully authorities or otherwise independent investigators are looking into that here so there can be accountability, if appropriate.
