Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the main reasons families call me about single-vehicle wrecks is they want to be sure their loved one’s side of the story is told fairly. That’s an entirely reasonable concern, and it’s often good instincts, as well. Unfortunately, police sometimes treat crashes like this as a low priority, and that can lead to important details going unnoticed.

That’s why it can be helpful for families to be direct with their concerns to the authorities. Have they pulled cellphone data? Looked at data from the vehicle? Did they inspect the vehicle for things like brake failure, defective safety features, faulty electronics, or other possible defects? Is there something wrong with this particular stretch of road? Are there any signs this was a hit-and-run?

At the end of the day, it’s not about what is or isn’t likely. It’s about letting the evidence speak for itself. If authorities can do that, that would be an encouraging sign they’re likely doing good investigations. But if they only leave doubts and unanswered questions, it could be there’s more to this story not getting the attention it deserves.
