Accident Report
North Richland Hills, TX — June 2, 2026, Collette Morrissey and Cookie Roberts were killed in a truck accident at about 12:30 p.m. on Airport Freeway/Interstate 820.
A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2017 Tesla Model S was heading southwest when it sideswiped a 2025 Freightliner semi-truck while changing lanes near Holiday Lane and crashed into a retaining wall. The Tesla had its autonomous unit engaged at the time of the crash.
Telsa driver Collette Morrissey, 72, and passenger Somloudee “Cookie” Roberts, 52, died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to the report.
The truck driver was not injured.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Tarrant County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Initial reports say a Tesla collided with a semi-truck, even though it had autonomous driving technology enabled. That is a red flag for me after more than 30 years of being involved in accident investigations.
Such systems are meant to protect drivers by taking over when it detects a problem. In theory, it should have prevented the Tesla from changing lanes with a semi-truck so close, but apparently it failed to do so. If that is case, the manufacturer may share some blame for this crash.
The Tesla should be inspected by a qualified expert before it is scrapped or repaired to determine if these systems were working as they were programmed.
