Accident Report
February 23, 2026, Cody Walters was injured due to a single-car accident just after 3:30 a.m. along Farm to Market 13.
According to authorities, 34-year-old Cody Walters was traveling in a northwest bound Chevrolet Sonic on F.M. 13 in the vicinity between the Paschal Street and Magnolia Street intersections when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Sonic failed to appropriately control its speed. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a tree and overturned.
Walters reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
At a glance, it’s tempting for people to assume that driver error was behind this accident. After all, only one vehicle was involved and it happened in the dark hours of the early morning. I however, am slow to jump to those conclusions. I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of single-vehicle accidents over the last three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of cases where the investigation turns of up underlying evidence that was beyond the control of the driver.
To be clear, I do not know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the Sonic failed to control its speed not due to driver input, but due to a throttle issue? If the throttle somehow got stuck in the open position, then the vehicle would maintain high speeds, or even accelerate, despite the gas pedal not being depressed. That could easily have led the Sonic to lose control.
On top of that, the Sonic overturned over the course of the wreck. Most people don’t know this, but the rollover tests that car manufacturers are required to pass are terrible at actually simulating real-world scenarios. I would be very interested to know if a design flaw contributed to its rollover. After all, Walter’s injuries might have been less severe had the Sonic managed to remain safely upright.
Hopefully, the authorities who are in charge of the investigation are thorough and openminded enough to look past the surface-level evidence in this accident. If, for any reason, their investigation seems shortsighted, then a third party investigation can always step in to take up the slack. That way, all the bases are covered.
