How Did This Accident Occur?

A lot of people just assume single-vehicle car accidents must be the result of driver error. That’s certainly common, considering things like distracted driving and unsafe speeds. However, it’s always important that investigations consider unlikely possible factors, as well. That’s where police investigations can come up short.

To be clear, police handling this crash might be doing a perfectly adequate investigation. It’s just that I’ve been doing this for over 30 years now, and independent investigations often catch details—both big and small—that authorities miss. This can range from potholes to bad lighting to major vehicle defects. Letting these things slip through cracks means failing to tell the whole story.

In other words, people should feel confident they’re getting all the facts. So if authorities have already been thorough here, that’s good. It’s simply not anything I’d ever take for granted.
