I have to wonder if authorities here were more thorough behind the scenes than their public statements suggest. Harris County is generally one of the more proactive jurisdictions when it comes to accidents involving alcohol. Not only do they usually see drunk drivers get their day in court, they often look into where that alcohol came from and if an alcohol provider illegally over-served the driver. I can’t count how many cases against alcohol providers our firm has had where we basically had to put evidence in the laps of authorities before they did anything. That’s why it’s refreshing to see when authorities take that initiative on their own to make sure victims and families see the resolution they deserve.

But Houston and the surrounding area is big, and there’s no shortage of alcohol providers willing to break the law. Even authorities in a more motivated area like Harris County can let something get by them. Even if that happened here, though, it’s not too late to make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks. There could still be a lot more to this story yet to be addressed.
