Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With single-vehicle accidents, it’s important to ensure authorities are taking things seriously and not letting anything important slip through the cracks. As obvious as that may seem, the reality is single-vehicle wrecks aren’t often a high priority for a lot of departments. If something unusual leads to an accident, such as a defect, road hazards, missing signage or lighting, or medical conditions, it may not be immediately clear in the preliminary investigations. If authorities are rushed to move on to other jobs, it can leave them in a spot where they have to give the family an incomplete story or just fill in the blanks with what their gut says is the most likely explanation.
That’s why I get calls all the time from folks who feel the authorities are missing something or aren’t telling them the whole story. In most every situation, the solution ends up being a more thorough independent accident reconstruction. Sometimes, an independent investigation can reassure families that police were diligent and left no stone unturned. Other times, it can reveal important details that the haphazard preliminary investigations missed. Either way, the end result should always be that the evidence speaks for itself and that the victim’s loved ones feel confident they’re getting the whole story.
