In my experience, people are often too quick to jump to conclusions after a rear-end collision. It’s an age-old myth that someone who rear-ends another vehicle is automatically to blame for the crash. There can be all sorts of contributing factors to consider, and drivers can’t always avoid an accident. Looking into those possible factors can be especially complex when one considers that this is a commercial vehicle wreck. Those almost always present their own unique challenges.

What were road conditions like at the time? Was weather poor? Did the victim’s vehicle have braking issues? Were the truck and its trailer lit properly? Had the truck recently turned or merged onto westbound lanes? Did the victim’s vehicle have defects with safety features, such as seatbelts, airbags, or collision avoidance systems? Did a medical condition or some other emergency contribute to the accident? Is this stretch of road known for causing accidents frequently?

Likely or not, a proper accident reconstruction should be able to answer these kinds of questions. I’m used to seeing independent accident reconstructionists provide satisfactory answers, but authorities on their own aren’t always as thorough. If they’ve been able to get the family involved here clear answers, that’s likely a sign they’ve done good work in their investigations. But if there are concerns not being adequately addressed, that may be a sign there needs to be a second set of eyes looking at the accident.
