Austin, TX — October 20, 2024, Christopher Liptan and Kenta Suzuki were injured following an alleged drunk driver accident at 8:08 p.m. on Congress Avenue.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened at the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Ben White Boulevard.

Investigators said that 53-year-old Christopher Liptan was in a BMW while 40-year-old Kenta Suzuki was in a Toyota Corolla. They were in a line of vehicles slowing or stopped on southbound Congress due to the Ben White traffic signal. While there, a Dodge Ram 3500 slammed into the vehicles from behind.
Liptan reportedly had serious injuries due to the crash while Suzuki’s injuries were called moderate. There did not appear to be any other injuries. Authorities allege that the Dodge driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

While the allegations aren’t confirmed right now, it’s obviously concerning to see authorities mention alcohol as a possible factor here. While folks might think that makes things open-and-shut, alcohol can make a crash challenging. It’s not always as simple as seeing a drunk driver face charges when there could also be a negligent alcohol provider who contributed to the crash.
Simply put, alcohol providers who unlawfully over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated can potentially face criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability for resulting injuries. Too often, though, these alcohol providers fly under the radar. Authorities have a lot on their plates, so once there’s a driver facing charges, they tend to move on. I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers, and it’s rare to see authorities already looking into those establishments on their own. We usually have to hand them evidence from our own independent investigations before they take those steps.
It’s possible authorities here are being more thorough, and they’ll make sure all of the factors that led to this crash are being properly addressed. In my experience, though, if there’s more to this story than just an individual drunk driver, it’s not likely to come to light from official investigations alone.
