Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
At just about 4:00 p.m., this sort of crash isn’t all that common. Trucks tend to run off-road late at night or early in the morning when things like fatigue are more prevalent. That can certainly happen in the afternoon, as well, but it makes me wonder if something unusual led to this crash.
One possibility, for example, is a mechanical issue. Frankly, I have reports come across my desk all the time where authorities didn’t even bother looking into mechanical defects after a serious truck wreck. That’s not really the fault of officers. It takes unique tools and training to look into something so complicated, and their departments rarely give them what they need. Whether or not that happened here, my hope is the authorities investigating the details are at least skilled and equipped enough to consider these unusual possible factors.
