Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Authorities only mentioned in their reports that the truck driver didn’t stay in his lane, but that’s more of an effect than a cause. Maybe they’re still looking into exactly how and why the truck went off-course, but they may have washed their hands of the matter and moved on to something else. That happens far too often with single-vehicle wrecks: Since only one person was involved, that person tends to take the heat for crashing even if unusual (and undiscovered) factors like tire blowouts, road hazards, hit-and-run drivers, or medical emergencies might have played parts.
Given the wear and tear many commercial trucks endure between maintenance, and also considering that many truck drivers are beholden to employers who might not have their safety in mind, it seems a little premature to just pin the blame on the driver and walk away. There are many other possible factors a prudent accident reconstructionist would consider before throwing blame around. As things stand, it’s not clear whether the authorities gave this crash the attention it deserved; if they won’t, though, someone else should.
