Whenever I come across a crash involving a large commercial vehicle like a cement truck, my first thought is that I hope the driver and their family get the answers they need. While single-vehicle accidents are often assumed to be the result of driver error, the reality is that crashes involving heavy trucks are rarely that simple. To fully understand what happened, there are three critical questions that need to be addressed.

First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation? Commercial truck accidents require a level of analysis that goes beyond what is typical for passenger vehicle crashes. Did investigators document the scene properly, including taking measurements, examining tire marks, and assessing road conditions? Given that the crash damaged both the truck and the roadway, was an accident reconstruction expert brought in to determine whether external factors, such as the road’s condition, played a role? Without a comprehensive investigation, crucial details may be missed.

Second, has anyone looked into whether a mechanical issue or vehicle defect contributed to the crash? Large trucks are complex machines that rely on properly functioning brakes, suspension, and steering systems. If any of these components failed—whether due to a manufacturing defect, poor maintenance, or overloading—the driver may have been put in an impossible situation. Unfortunately, most crash investigations don’t prioritize examining mechanical failures unless someone specifically pushes for it. Preserving the vehicle for inspection is essential to determining whether a defect contributed to the crash.

Third, has all electronic data related to the crash been collected? Most commercial trucks are equipped with electronic control modules (ECMs) that store valuable data about speed, braking, and other key factors leading up to a crash. Additionally, some companies install dash cameras or telematics systems that provide even more context. If investigators don’t secure this information quickly, it could be lost or overwritten, making it much harder to determine what truly happened.

At the end of the day, serious crashes like this don’t just affect the driver—they impact their loved ones and the broader community. Answering these three questions is the best way to ensure that all possibilities are explored, whether the cause was mechanical failure, road conditions, or something else entirely. Those affected deserve a full and fair investigation so they can move forward with clarity.
