Something I have to address a lot on this blog is people who believe single-vehicle wrecks must be a driver’s fault. That’s simply not true. The law is not so rigid that someone who couldn’t avoid a crash will be blamed just because they’re the only person involved in the crash itself.
For example, what if a tire blew out? What if the vehicle had a defect? What if something was in the road? What if the road itself is poorly maintained or is missing signage or lighting? It’d be ridiculous for someone to be at fault for those things, especially when some of those factors may have been the result of an outside party’s negligence.
Obviously, drivers make mistakes, and things like speeding, distraction, and fatigue shouldn’t be ruled out without clear evidence. The problem is when authorities end up moving on to other responsibilities before getting all the facts, leaving room for people to speculate. That’s why it’s important that there are measures to pick up any slack authorities leave behind after their own investigations, that way there can be a clear picture of the factors leading to the crash. Currently, I see no reason why this crash would be an exception to that.
