Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

In initial statements, authorities said alcohol was being considered, though nothing has been confirmed publicly at this time. Folks should keep in mind that authorities often look into alcohol after any fatal wreck and not necessarily because they suspect it. It’s common enough in Texas—especially at this hour—that it would be irresponsible not to look into alcohol, if only to rule it out.

That said, the lack of confirmation from authorities makes me wonder if the investigations became more complex than usual. That’s something that happens often with these early morning wrecks. For example, our firm has litigated countless personal injury and wrongful death cases against bars who contributed to drunk driving crashes between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Since those bars can also face criminal investigations, authorities can quickly find a run-of-the-mill crash becomes a serious criminal investigation into a local alcohol provider that could still be putting the public at risk.

That’s just one possibility, of course. I’d never jump to conclusions when the evidence should simply speak for itself. Hopefully authorities continue to thoroughly investigate these events so the families affected here know they’re getting the answers they deserve.
