Travis County, TX — June 22, 2024, a man was killed and Carlos Lazaro Perez and one other were injured after a car accident at 5:00 p.m. on F.M. 969.
According to initial details on the crash, it happened east of Austin off the corner of F.M. 969 and Blue Bluff Road, which is near F.M. 973.
Investigators said in their statements that 25-year-old Carlos Lazaro Perez and a woman were in a Chevy Silverado going northwest on F.M. 969. A 30-year-old man was in a Chevy Suburban traveling the opposite direction. The Suburban reportedly crossed into oncoming lanes where it collided with the pickup.
As a result of the crash, the suburban driver was killed. Carlos Lazaro Perez and his passenger had injuries described as moderate and serious, respectively. While details are not confirmed, authorities said they suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Something I see a lot is people thinking that alcohol makes a crash open-and-shut. That’s simply not true. While authorities may be quick to wrap up their investigations, there’s often an accomplice who contributed to the accident that requires investigations beyond the crash scene. If a driver was unlawfully over-served by a bar, for example, they, too, can be held responsible.
Alcohol providers in Texas who serve someone that’s obviously intoxicated can face criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, and liability for the injuries resulting from that intoxication. Too often, though, they’re let off the hook because folks don’t know about this area of the law, and authorities tend to have other priorities. I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers, and I’ve lost count of how often we ended up confronting an establishment authorities nearly let off the hook.
So if it’s true that alcohol was a factor here, there may still be a lot more to this story than authorities are addressing. Generally speaking, folks involved in a serious accident are keen to see all responsible parties held accountable, so there may need to be additional steps taken here to ensure nothing important is slipping through the cracks.
