When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks like this, one of the most common mistakes I see is people assuming authorities will get every last detail. That simply doesn’t track to the reality I’ve encountered across 30 years of doing this job. The reality is authorities don’t often have the time or tools to investigate unusual possibilities, meaning details can often slip through the cracks.
Case in point, I had a case not long ago where they wrongly accused someone of not wearing their seatbelt. Their evidence for this was simply that the victim wasn’t in the driver’s seat after the crash happened. Well, if they had the tools and experience of the independent investigators we had examine the vehicle, they would have found that the victim’s seatbelt had a defect. The pretensioner failed, causing the victim to be thrown from their seat despite wearing their safety belt properly.
I’m not saying that happened here or even that similar factors are at all common. But crashes can involve all kinds of complex contributing factors. Failing to at least rule them out only risks missing something important. What all were authorities able to rule out here?
