How Did This Accident Occur?

People see a crash involving an animal on the road and assume that there’s nothing else to investigate. That’s just not true. For example, there could be a complex legal situation if the animal was a cow or horse, as opposed to a deer, for example. Livestock owners have a basic responsibility to secure animals so they don’t wander off a property. If owners don’t take reasonable steps to do so, and it results in a car crashing into the animal or losing control trying to avoid it, the animal owner may face consequences.

Of course, that’s all based on a lot of unknowns surrounding this particular crash. My goal here isn’t to speculate but rather to remind people that serious accidents need serious investigations. I can’t recall any accident investigations I’ve been a part of where things were just open-and-shut from the beginning. They almost always treated things seriously from the outset to make sure nothing unusual slipped through the cracks. My hope is that investigators in charge of this crash are being equally thorough.
