Even when details seem straight-forward, victims and families need to have as much evidence telling their story as possible. It can be crucial, then, to ask key questions about the efforts police made in their investigations.
Did authorities take the time to fully analyze the scene? Traffic signal timing, sightlines, and road conditions could all be factors. Were skid marks, impact points, and witness statements properly documented?
Did they check for possible vehicle defects? Brake failures, acceleration issues, or faulty airbags and seatbelts could have influenced the crash or injury severity. Were both vehicles inspected before any evidence was lost?
Did they secure all electronic evidence? Traffic cameras, dashcams, and the vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs) could provide key details. Did investigators ensure this evidence was collected before it disappeared?
If authorities can provide clear answers, it’s likely because they were thorough in their investigations. However, if the answers come up short, there may need to be secondary investigations to make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
